Game Design – 2022
was tun? Das Spiel um Alltag, Moral und Ethik
Awarded the Henry Steiner Prize at the Joseph Binder Award, the project was recognized as one of the competition’s most promising emerging works. The award was presented in Vienna in November 2022, and the project has since been showcased in a travelling exhibition throughout Austria.
The project was featured in PAGE, one of Germany’s leading magazines for design, branding and digital culture.
For my bachelor's thesis, I explored how design can make complex societal topics accessible through play. Rather than focusing on a specific controversial issue, I became interested in the broader question behind many public debates: how do we decide what is right or wrong? The result was was tun? (“What should I do?”), an analogue board game that encourages players to reflect on moral questions and discuss ethical dilemmas from everyday life. Designed for two to four players, the game creates a space for conversation without judging opinions as correct or incorrect. There are no winners, no losers, and no single truth to discover—only different perspectives, arguments, and values. Accompanied by an editorial booklet introducing key concepts from ethical theory, the project combines education, communication, and entertainment, demonstrating how game design can foster dialogue, critical thinking, and meaningful exchange.
